Q: Guruji, what has God got to do with spirituality? Can I not believe and still be spiritual?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yes! Do you know, in the six Darshanas (schools of India Philosophy), the first three Darshanas do not even talk about God –Nyaaya, Vaisheshika, Sankhya. Nyaaya Darshana by Gautama Maharishi deals with knowledge – whether your knowledge is correct or not. Knowing the means of knowledge whether it is correct or not, this is Nyaaya Darshana. For example, from your senses you see the Sun setting and the Sun rising. But Nyaaya Darshana says, ‘No, you cannot just believe what you see, you have to go beyond and find out, does the Sun really set or is the Earth moving?’. We think that Copernicus found out that the earth is going around the sun, but that is absolute false. He definitely found out, but before that, in India, people already knew a long time ago that the Earth is going around the Sun. Nyaaya Darshana talks about all that. It talks about perception and the correction of perception! And then Vaisheshika Darshana – this is a count of all the things in the universe – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether, and then all the objects and subjects, and all that analysis. This is Vaisheshika Darshana. In this, they talk about the mind, consciousness, intellect, memory and all that. Then is Sankhya Darshana. So, these three Darshanas do not talk about God, but they talk about Consciousness. Only in the Yoga Sutras, which is the fourth Darshanas they talk about God as one topic. So you do not have to feel compelled to believe in God, but you have to believe in something. You have to at least believe in the Consciousness. Usually when we think of God, we think of somebody who is sitting out there in heaven, who created the creation, and then went away from the creation and started trying to find fault in everyone. Whatever you are doing, he is trying to take a stick and punish you. This is not the type of God that we have ever spoken of. God is the existence! The entire universe is made up of a stuff called Love, and that is what God is! You are inseparable from God. Nothing ever exists outside God; everything has to exist inside God only. So it is beyond good, bad, right, wrong, and all that. Pleasant and unpleasant is all immaterial. The One thing that exists, that One whole if you need to call it something, you can call it God. Or you do not have to worry, just know yourself. ![]() ![]()

Often, you would have experienced that when you remember the past, you are not the same person. That was not you, you feel, as though you are not at all connected to that person who did those jobs. How many of you feel this way? Whatever you did 15, 20 years ago, turn back and see. You will wonder, “Am I the same person? I did not do it. Somebody else did it”. Why? This is because the samskara of your consciousness has been erased, those things of the past have been erased. This makes you a new person, every time, every day. This is pure knowledge. If someone holds on to you for something what you did in the past, just laugh at them. This is because you are not the same person now. You see it as though somebody else did it.

Q: Guruji, personally I have a hard time connecting to concepts like the Divine or Supreme Consciousness or God. Can agnostic or atheist become an Art of Living teacher?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Definitely, don’t worry as long as you acknowledge there is form and there is formless and the world is an interplay of form and formless. You don’t have to see God with a nose, with hair, with a beard sitting somewhere up in heaven, there is no such God. If you believe in Godliness then that is good enough. If you think God is an energy that is good enough. You don’t have to see God as a person, telling you or talking to you or something. Like there is an electric field, biometric field there is also a field of love. If you acknowledge that then that is good enough. And the highest goal of a human life is to grow and feel connected with the entire cosmos. That is why Lord Buddha never talked about God. Also Pantanjali, when he described Yoga, in only one place he mentioned God, other than that he only talked about the consciousness, the mind. You know the Jains, they only talk about the self. They didn’t say there is a God up there somewhere. So even those who talked about God they said God is love. Jesus said God is love and love is God. ![]() ![]()

Q: Guruji, I can understand the truth of your knowledge. I can enjoy pooja, bhajans and all the Indian customs as well around you. But, when I am together with my friends, it is very difficult to speak about all this; especially, listening to a Master. In our country, we learn to follow our mind and not any Masters. What can you suggest to make Art of Living more acceptable?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Do you know, 30 years ago, when we first started The Art of Living then also it was very difficult. Teaching yoga means only someone who is out there, someone who is crazy, would do yoga. But today people like yoga. I want to tell you one thing. You don’t have to talk about pooja, chanting and all that to one who does not know. Just talk about meditation, Sudarshan Kriya, Part 1 course, this is good enough. And I tell you, today people are much more open than before. You don’t need to say, ’I follow a Master’, this and that. I make everybody leaders. I am in the back giving you a push to go forward. A coach is essential everywhere, whether it is sports, or music, or cooking. Unless you have a coach who helps you learn how to be a good cook, you cannot get certified. So, for yoga, for exercise, even soccer you need a good coach, isn’t it? So similarly, for spirituality, which is very abstract, you definitely need a coach, someone who trains you. A Master never tell you, ‘Shut your brain and don’t think’, no! He encourages you to think freely. This is what you need to know. The Art of Living encourages Reasoning and Faith, both. Faith and Reason, they may appear to be conflicting. It has happened in the past like that. That is how the Spanish inquisition happened. In the past if the Church said something you should never question it. So, the entire revolution in Russia about Communism started because reason was shunned. But in the East that never happened. East always said, ‘Honor your reason.’ In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna gives Arjuna the entire knowledge, and then finally he says, ‘You reason, if it appeals to your intellect then you accept it. Whatever I said, if your intellect does not accept it then you need not accept whatever I have said.’ Buddha said the same thing, ‘You must have Reason and Surrender as well. Have faith.’ This is what Lord Buddha said. If you say, ‘Let me first learn swimming then I will get into water’, a real coach will say, ‘Get into the water and I will tell you how to swim.’ So it is not one after another, yes! As you get into water you have to swim immediately. You have to learn simultaneously. That is why Reason and Faith, they both are essential in life. You can’t learn swimming in the air first and then get into the water. Then you will not learn swimming. When you get into the water only then you will learn how to swim, correct! And there is a life jacket around you. The Master is like the life jacket. He teaches you to swim and once you start swimming then you know the value of it, isn’t that so? So, how to answer people? You need not answer every question that anybody asks. Sometimes just smile. You don’t know the value of it, but just taste it and then tell them. Someone might say, ’Oh! Why are you listening to chanting?’ ‘Oh! You don’t know the value of chanting. It is so wonderful. Just do it. Just listen to it once and you will see.’ That is what we want to share. We want to share what is best with everybody; with everyone. Not that in India everything is good or everything better, no! There are many hopeless things also. But we have picked the good things and are sharing it with the world. Similarly, every religion, every culture has something very beautiful. That we should share. Not the fanaticism and not the small mindedness. ![]() ![]()

Kitaip niekaip negausi reikiamo energijos kiekio smegenims. Pasidomėk iš ko sudarytos smegenys - riebalai, cholesterolis, baltymai. Žoleles valgant smegenys greit sudžius iki beždžionės lygio. Ypač šiaurės platumose, kur neauga alyvuogės ir avokadai. The nature of mind is to waver, similar to how the nature of water is to flow.
Now how do you reduce this wavering nature of the mind? It is through practice (abhyaasa) and dispassion (vairagya). What is dispassion? Sometimes, when you are disturbed, you say, ‘I don’t want anything. Enough is enough (suffering)!’ This is one kind of dispassion which you experience when you are disturbed. It is called Smashana (cemetery)Vairagya. The second kind of dispassion is when you say with awareness, ‘I don’t want anything. I have had enough (contentment)! Everything in the world changes; nothing is permanent. I don’t mind if I have or don’t have something.’ This is the second type of dispassion, and is called Gyana (knowledge) Vairagya. We need to have Gyana Vairagya and not Smashana Vairagya. The mind always moves towards pleasure. If we have knowledge and dispassion then all the pleasures will come to us. It is also said that the pleasure that comes out of Abhyaasa (practice) is the highest. Everyone has to experience at least one of the two types of dispassion. So it is better to say, ‘I have had enough’, out of awareness and contentment. That is the higher kind of dispassion! ![]() ![]()

Guruji, When the mind is full of doubts or depressed, how do I convince myself that the fears that come up are not true?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: When the mind is full of doubts or is depressed, it means that the level of prana has come down. When the level of prana goes down, doubts arise and we become sad. So, the remedy is to increase the prana level, through pranayama, proper food, exercise, singing and fasting. Go on a fruit diet for a few days. We keep on stuffing ourselves with food, even if we are not hungry. ![]() ![]()

Neabejok meile.

Kodėl nori laikytis disciplinos? Nuo to tapsi laimingesnis?

Net nesuvokę to, esame nenuilstantys oro malūnai, sukantys kvėpuojantį gyvybės ratą. Tačiau mūsų grūdai, mūsų miltai, duona – žmogaus gyvenimas. Įkvepiu – gaunu dovanų; Iškvepiu – dėkoju…" N.G.Wolmer |

Į ką nukreipi dėmesį, tas pasireiškia. Neklijuok sau etiketės ir neturi būti jokio „visada“. Pripažink, kad nežinai savo paties potencialo. Galbūt galvoji, kad visada turi tam tikrų sunkumų, tačiau būtent toks mąstymas nukreipia ketinimą neigiama linkme. Tiesiog žinok, kad išsipildys viskas, ko benorėtum.

Q: Guruji, can you please speak about bondage? Why does the soul feel trapped, and what are the causes of bondage?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Ignorance is the cause of bondage. And why there is ignorance? There is no answer to that. Why has the Divine first created this ignorance and then the means to get out of it? That is why it is called Leela (a game or play of the Divine). It is like asking, ‘Why do we have a football match? Why are there two courts with some coaches and some players on one side, and some on the other side, pushing the ball from this side to that side? Why do they not have their own balls and stay in their own courts?’ Then there is no play! So because of ignorance there is a play, there is the game. That is why the whole world is called the Leela of the Parampurusha (the Supreme Divinity). ![]() ![]()
